Paula Baker, MSN, RNC

Legal Nurse Consultant

Paula Baker, MSN, RNC is the firm’s part-time in-house legal nurse reviewer. She combines her years of expertise in Labor & Delivery along with her years of experience in Risk Management to assist with the firm’s medical malpractice cases. She has certifications in Inpatient Obstetrics, Electronic Fetal Monitoring, Obstetric and Neonatal Quality and Patient Safety and is also a certified legal nurse consultant. Paula also worked on a 4-year multi center randomized control trial that examined the effectiveness of a structured approach to assessment and care by nurses in the early or latent phase of labor. The hypothesis was to evaluate the effectiveness of this structured approach and to compare the costs of the new approach to the costs of usual care.  The objective was to determine if a complex nursing intervention in hospital labor assessment units would increase the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth and improve other maternal and neonatal outcomes. The conclusion was that a structured approach to care increased satisfaction with care and was suggestive of a modest increase in the likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth. This study was published in the British Medical Journal in August of 2008.

Paula obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Women’s University and her Master’s in Nursing Administration, magna cum laude, from the University of Texas at Tyler.

In her spare time Paula and her husband love to travel. Her favorite place to visit is the beach. She also has two grown sons and two little fur babies that she loves spending time with
